Claiming Your Google Places Business Page

Here is a process I follow when setting up a new Google Places listing, it is the same whether or not someone else has already claimed your Business listing page (yes that does happen for various reasons, if you follow these steps you can regain control of your Google Places Business page.)

Step 1. – Create a gmail account if you don’t have one already. This will be your central hub for all Google related business activities from here on so I usually create it in the name of the business i.e ‘[email protected]

You can go here to create the account:
http://google.com/mail

You will see a screen like this: (click on the image to see it full size)

Gmail Email from Google

If you already have a Gmail/Google account then you can go to this link:

You will see a screen like this: (click on the image to see it full size)

Welcome to Google Places for Business

Once you are logged in to the Google Places for Business section you will see a screen like this: (click on the image to see it full size)

Google Places Start Page

Follow the instructions in blue to search for your existing places page (click on the image to see it full size), if you are a new business do this anyway, you will arrive at the next screen:

Google Places Set Up Screen

If you are ‘re-claiming’ then the information should be pre-populated from an existing listing, this is a great time saver all though you will most likely want to refine and or adjust the info once you have finished the verification process…

Once you have dealt with this stage, no need to go crazy filling everything in yet, you will click the ‘Submit’ button at the bottom and go to the next screen: (click on the image to see it full size)

Google Places For Business Verification

Once you are here it’s a case of checking the address, or phone number if you are lucky enough to get an ‘instant verification message’ option, clicking on the ‘Finish’ button and waiting for your PIN.

You will be able to return to your Google Places account page and see your listing, it won’t be active until you receive the PIN and enter it to make your listing appear in Google: (click on the image to see it full size)

Google Places Account Login

Once that PIN has been entered you will need to ‘Edit’ your listing and ensure everything is filled in according to Google’s guidelines and their terms of use.

Of course if you really want to make the most of the opportunity a properly set up and marketed Google Places page can provide….
